The fisherman no one will ever forget
“Hold your head up high. Be proud of this industry,” Captain Jimmy Ruhle told commercial fishermen in 2020.
A skillful fisherman trusted by scientists who tapped his expertise to help guide their research, Captain Ruhle, of Wanchese, N.C., recognized early on the importance of sustainable fishing practices.
He shared his wisdom and deep knowledge as a member of the the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council and positively affected the industry through legislation.
A mentor to young people entering commercial fishing, Captain Ruhle was the inspiration for his own advice. He leaves an everlasting mark not just on the profession he loved but on our state, our nation and every heart he touched.
North Carolina will never forget this incredible man who passed away on the morning of September 28, 2023. A funeral service is scheduled be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 2, 2023, at Bethany Church of Wanchese. Graveside services follow in Tillett Cemetery.
