Make the Impossible, Possible: How to Debone Shad
The American Shad is a herring species and spends most of their lives in the ocean but spawn in the fresh water. Shad was a plentiful fish in previous centuries being described as the "fish that fed our nation's founders." Commercial fisherman on the east coast discovered this plentiful species in the late 1800's with high paying prices in abundance. This fishing season came to an end in the early 20th century because of the decline in the shad population. The shad roe still remains as a delicacy today for seafood consumers.
Shad is a great source of Omega 3 but those of us who love shad know that struggle when it comes to filleting this famously bony fish. Click here to learn biologist Bill McCord's step by step secret to filleting shad.
