Fisheries Reform Act Anniversary Summit

FRA Summit

The 20th anniversary of the Fisheries Reform Act is this year and the Outer Banks Catch will host an anniversary summit.

There will be four panels comprised of some who worked on developing the recommendations that are the basis for the act. Others will be those who worked with implementing the act or participated in some way.

The panels will address why was the act needed, how was it developed, how was it implemented, and now, 20 years later, is it still standing the test of time or does it need tweaking. Also, there will be a panel to discuss emerging issues such a climate change effects on fisheries.

Panelists include but are not limited to Jess Hawkins, fisheries biologist who was then liaison to the MFC; Bill Ross, former Secretary of DENR; Bill Holman, then representing environmental organizations and later director of Clean Water Trust Fund; BJ Copeland, then Sea Grant director; Bob Lucas, then MFC and Moratorium Steering Committee chairman; Susan West, commercial fishing activist and member of Steering Committee; and Anne Deaton, DMF Habitat Protection Section chief.

North Carolina Coastal Federation Director Todd Miller will moderate the discussions.

In addition to the panels, NC Sea Grant, North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries and the Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership will provide exhibits on water quality and habitat, and work on the FRA.
